Let me add a corollary to Keith's postulate. Education is in need of immediate reform. If we are to produce the engineers necessary to work on infrastructure and industrial restructuring, we will need to cultivate skills such as collaboration, authentic commnunication and open-ended problem solving in our public schools. Now is the time to invest in our most precious resource - our children.

No Child Left Behind has given our teachers a mandate to supply each child with facts, but has rendered our children ill prepared for a global economy. Command of fact is not a sufficient tool for our future engineers to effect the transformation of American industry into sustainable endeavors. Future engineers will need the tools of integration of knowledge, meaningful communication and effective interaction with people of many cultural backgrounds.

Industry is begging for our educational system to produce students qualified to lead us into the next decade of the 21 Century. The largest untapped pools of engineering talent are women and people of color. Let's invest in our English as a Second Language programs and develop incentives for women and minorities to step into the engineering role. Invest for the future. Do it now.
